450 or Bedtime Prayed

On a rainy night, I drive alone through Tbilisi when a voice message arrives from a close friend, a Ukrainian filmmaker now serving on the front line. Over thirteen minutes, his voice carries me through fear, uncertainty and grief, before arriving somewhere unexpected: the simple joy of swimming in a river on a hot summer evening. 450 is a military term meaning “all is fine,” a coded reassurance from the front. But when I shared the film with him, he offered another interpretation: “It has nothing to do with 450. For me, it’s more like a Bedtime Prayer.”
