Synopsis

This personal 16mm film began as a meditation on the very direction of progress — a value that has become omnipresent in modern society, where all positive ideals have been fused with the idea of progress. From social progress, which forms the basis of efforts to correct inequality, to every kind of innovation that fuels the modern global economy during the long stretches between wars and their subsequent reconstructions.

With this sweeping notion of progress comes velocity — the swift discarding of the old and embrace of the new, which soon, too, becomes obsolete.

And then there’s the personal layer. We exist in the present, yet increasingly live with what has passed. We are ever more capable of preserving it — and much of it, we love.

What is happening to the human being, to humanity, in this ferment? What future lies ahead in a world forever chasing the new and the better?
