Synopsis
In Indonesia, Papuans are systematically marginalized and murdered in what has been called one of the world’s most neglected genocides. To understand what is happening, this film brings to life the early 60’s in unique and lively 35mm archival footage. Here we witness how the Dutch promise for Papuan independence grew out to become a mayor global conflict. This engaging, untold piece of world history is juxtaposed by the powerful stories of Papuans in exile and their ongoing struggle for justice. Ultimately, The Promise portrays a culture that allows genocide to silently happen. This is the story of how colonialism became neo-colonialism.
